Still have questions?  Here are some frequently asked questions:

Q:  Do you have emergency housing?

A:  There is no emergency housing available through Mexico Housing Authority.

Q:  If I have a past-due balance owed to MHA or any other housing authority, can I still apply and be approved for housing?

A:  NO.  There is no need to fill out an application or go through these steps until all past-due balances are PAID IN FULL.  You cannot make payments or be approved for housing until your balance is zero with MHA or with any other housing authority.  The applicable HUD guidelines as published can be found in PIH Notice 2010-19.

Q:  How long does it take for my application to be approved?

A:  You are never fully approved until a unit offer is sent and you have up-dated all your information.  But for you to get on the wait list, it takes approximately 2-6 weeks for us to process your application.

Q:  How long is the wait list or how long does it take to be housed?

A:  It is different all the time.  The correct unit size must be vacant for us to make an offer to the next household on the wait list.

Q:  Why does my number change on the wait list?

A:  Two reasons.  First because we are leasing units due to vacancy, or second because someone has more points than you.  We have a preference point system, meaning if you have a job or are elderly/disabled, you get 50 points.  If you live in Audrain County, you get 50 points.  So keep your information up-dated.

Q:  How do I up-date my information on the application?

A:  Go back to the on-line application portal above and click “View Your Application”.  From that link, you must enter the requested identifying information.  Then you are able to “view” and up-date any needed information.  You also need to put the change in writing to the MHA office by writing the change out and dropping it off or you may send an email to [email protected] with the change.  It is critical that you keep your address and phone contact information up-to-date so that you receive our documentation via U.S. postal service mail.

Q:  How do a check my spot on the wait list?

A:   Log in to your on-line application and see your wait list placement number in the upper right hand corner of your screen.

Q:  What type of background check is required to apply for public housing?

A:  We will run a 5-year check of your criminal history, rent history, rent terminations and debts owed.

Q:  Where can I get a local landlord listing?

A:  MHA can only provide this list if you have received a voucher from us and are actively searching for rental property.
